A look back at the college closures and mergers of 2023
More than a dozen colleges announced closures this year. Most struggled with enrollment issues that only accelerated after the coronavirus pandemic. Nonprofit colleges and universities that announced closures this year largely fit the same profile: mostly small, private, tuition-dependent institutions with meager endowments that have seen enrollment slipping for years and have been unable to recover from those sustained losses.
