Southern Pantanal, Brazil It might be a relief to some of my contacts to know that this is the last of my Pantanal photos! Our sighting of this particular animal was one of the highlights of the trip so it seems appropriate that I should end the series with this shot. We were driving along and I suddenly spotted movement from the side of the track. I hissed ‘Stop!’ to our driver, and he slammed on the brakes. Slowly the most beautiful Puma appeared – a juvenile we think – and sauntered off on an adjacent track. We followed on foot at a respectful distance and I was able to get this one half-decent shot just before it turned, looked at us and disappeared into the undergrowth. Truly a magical moment and one I won’t forget in a hurry! Pumas are quite rare in the Pantanal and it’s very unusual to see one in the daytime. Despite being scarce locally, the species can be found throughout the Americas and its name changes depending on the region where it lives. Other names are the Mountain Lion, Cougar or Panther.
